One of the biggest struggles a business can have is converting interest in its products and services into credible leads. This can be doubly frustrating when you can see that your website is ranking well and getting plenty of traffic. If your website gets no phone calls, even though you can see people are browsing your site, you may have a website—and marketing copy—issue. Learn how to diagnose the most common issues and what to do next.
3 Common Website Issues That Impact Phone Calls
If you’re not getting phone calls, it’s important to know whether people are even visiting your site (and whether you actually have plenty of traffic). Start by checking your Google Analytics. Not sure if it’s set up properly? Check out our guide here. Once you’ve confirmed you’ve got traffic but no calls, check these common website issues:
Calls to Action
Calls to Action (CTAs) are text, images, and links on your website designed to prompt visitors to take specific sales or marketing actions. While these come in many forms, the one relevant to phone calls is usually a button on the home page, header, and/or footer with your phone number and a big “call now” button. Don’t have one? Learn more about CTAs here.
Troubleshooting Tel Links
These buttons, and every time your phone number appears on your website, should be accompanied by a “tel” link (also known as Phone Links or Telephone Links). These are similar to hyperlinks, except that instead of taking you to another site, they call a number. These should be configured as such—tel:phonenumber, here’s ours as an example: (508) 754-3643. If you already have them, review your website to make sure they are set up correctly.
Your Website on Mobile Devices
If you have calls to action but no one is using them, your website may not be properly viewed on mobile devices. Outside of specific industries and services, the majority of website traffic today is from smartphones. You should review your website on your phone, ideally using different browsers, to ensure everything displays properly.
Bonus Website Tip: Check Your Forms
While not phone calls, contact forms, and similar options should also be checked to make sure they are working properly. Troubleshoot your forms in the following ways:
- Test Your Forms: First, fill out your form yourself. Make sure all the bells and whistles you have (required entries, drop-downs, opt-ins) work, and that you get confirmation that your form was submitted.
- Check Your Email: Second, check the email account the form is supposed to notify. Is it showing up? If not, you may need to configure the form backend. It can also end up in your spam folder if misconfigured, so make sure to check there.
- Anti-Spam Measures: Speaking of spam, it’s recommended to include anti-spam measures on your forms, as the rise of AI is making it easier than ever to spam business pages. We recommend using a CAPTCHA. Many forms come with it pre-loaded; you just need to turn it on.
