If you own a business and you’re still trying to do everything yourself, it’s time to take a seat and listen up. I know, it’s hard to admit. But you just can’t. Here’s the truth — you’re never going to run a successful business working around the clock and micromanaging every detail while carrying all the weight yourself. In our podcast episode, How to Delegate, we dive into how business owners can implement delegation strategies to scale their business effectively. We’ll show you how to build a dynamic, efficient team and create systems that empower your business to grow without relying on you for every little task.
Building a Strong Team for Task Delegation
When it comes to delegation, it’s not about throwing tasks at your staff — it’s about properly giving them the support they need to take on new responsibilities. You must get out of your own way and fire yourself from certain roles within the business. Yes, this is difficult, but we’re going to help you make a team that you can trust.
- Hire for Character Traits: Of course, your staff needs to have knowledge about the work that they will be completing. But that doesn’t mean they need to be a 10-year expert. Instead, look for those redeeming qualities such as star communication skills, the ability to problem solve, and the interest in growing in their career.
- Invest in Your Staff: When your staff shows an interest in taking on new tasks or responsibilities, it’s essential to invest in their growth. Let them shadow and provide them necessary tools and training. Don’t just shove them off the diving board and let them “figure it out.”
Diving into Delegation Strategies
Now that you’ve got a solid foundation for building a strong team and delegating effectively, it’s time to dive into the strategies that will help you scale your business – and yes, help you finally get your life back.
Identify the Delegable Tasks
Let’s be real: not every task should be handed off to someone else. The point of delegation isn’t to offload everything that’s not nailed down, it’s about giving you more time to focus on aspects that will move your business forward.
Set Clear Expectations
Now that you have an idea about the tasks you’re interested in delegating, make sure your team knows exactly what to expect. Yes, of course, things will come up. But you need to give them guidance. What are your goals? Timelines?
Establish Feedback Loops
Give your team space to complete the tasks. Show them that you trust them, and even if they aren’t doing exactly what you would do, learn to accept that it is okay. All that matters is that the task is done with the quality and result that your business needs to succeed. But every week or so, you need to check in with your staff. Once again, do not push them off the diving board and let them figure out how to swim. Stay on top of your game, make sure what needs to be done is completed, and guarantee your staff has the training they need to succeed.
