AI isn’t inherently bad, but it is easy. AI platforms like ChatGPT and DeepAI have lowered the bar for creating marketing copy and images. This sea change, driven by the rise of AI marketing slop, has paradoxically raised minimum expectations. In the podcast episode, The Death of Generic: Why Your Marketing Must Be a Knife, Not a Spoon, co-hosts Laura and Julia explore how your marketing needs to be both creative and authentically you to stand out and get noticed.
Marketing Your Authenticity in the Digital Age
The rise of generative AI means it’s hard to stand out with stock images and generic text on your website, social media, and more. What you need is what AI can’t create something uniquely you: your authenticity. This can be expressed in many ways, from putting a face on your brand to a photoshoot of your products and services in action to content that sets you apart from the rest with both expert advice and a flair that goes against the grain.
Your Brand is More Than Your Logo
While it’s something we’ve said time and time again, it bears repeating: a shiny logo (while important) will only get you so far. Your branding is how people perceive your company, and it needs to be everywhere they may be online and—maybe more importantly—be consistent.
- Pick the social media platforms that matter the most. Discard the rest. Make sure you’re posting content that’s useful (educational or entertaining) to your customers.
- Be where your customers search for you. This doesn’t just mean Google, but also map and listing platforms, social media (see above), and even AI crawlers. Online presence is vital.
- Build trust with your community. From mission statements to useful advice to celebrating the holidays that matter to your community, building trust is essential.
